Sun Xun is a contemporary Chinese artist, who combines the art of painting, woodcuts, charcoal, and traditional chinese ink drawings to produce animated videos.
Born in 1980 in Fuxin, China, he had a strong interest in art and eventually studied printmaking at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Sun Xun blends the past and present together with his art to create intricate and haunting designs.
His artwork is influenced by Albrecht Durer’s woodcuts and his love for modern cinema. He explores how historical events are portrayed and even uses his art to question them. As most of his art features animals and beasts and uses historical places like the Forbidden City as inspiration for settings.
Sun Xun has been awarded: the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards (CCAA Best Young Artist) in 2010, the 8th AAC Art China – Young Artist Awards in 201, and the Asia Arts Changer Award in 2018. His artwork is showcased in museums like the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai.
