The fall season is filled with lots of fun and many different activities but perhaps the most unique to many American High Schools is homecoming, but as the homecoming season closes there is one school without one, Mount Saint Joseph Academy.
Many people think of homecoming as a football game and a dance, however for many schools homecoming is a day or even week celebrating school spirit with events like pep rallies, games, themed days, and untimely a dance.
Mount isn’t the only school who doesn’t have a homecoming dance or week because other all-girls schools, such as Gwynedd Mercy, also don’t have homecoming dances.
“We do not have a homecoming dance but a lot of girls go to homecoming at La salle, Prep, etc.” Marra Fitzgerald, Gwynedd Mercy ‘27, said.
But the question is, why doesn’t the Mount do a homecoming style fall dance?
Ms. Slaughter, Dean of Student Life, offers one answer to that question, “While I don’t know if it’s the actual reason we don’t do a fall dance, Mount used to do a harvest dance, but then we shifted to winter formals and instead added the Founders’ Day celebration with the dance party as the main fall event.”
Despite both Mount and Gwynedd not having fall dances, Merion Mercy, another all-girls school in the area does a fall dance, but it is just a fall semi-formal hosted by the school and not a homecoming dance surrounding a fall sport.
The event of homecoming isn’t just about the dance itself, as many people like to host pre-dance pics and after parties, which are many people’s favorite part of the event.
“My favorite part of going to La Salle homecoming the past two years has been meeting new people at my pre-pics and reconnecting with them this year.” Ally Demeter ‘26 said.
While Mount certainly does not need a fall dance, Ally Demeter ‘26, also brings up a good point as to why Mount might benefit from a fall dance, “I do think a fall dance would allow more connections, especially the freshman who don’t know their entire friend groups yet.”
However despite how some students might feel about Mount not having a fall dance or a homecoming, it doesn’t lack a spirit week, as Charity Day and Spirit week are a favorite event for many Mounties.
