After a year of anticipation, “Wicked: For Good” is finally hitting the big screen, and Mounties are counting down the days until Nov. 21, the movie’s release date.
Based on the beloved Broadway adaptation, the film brings life to Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship and their complicated journey between good and wicked. With dazzling costumes, a catchy soundtrack and performances that leave your jaw hanging on the floor, there’s plenty to get excited about before the movie appears in theaters.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked: For Good” stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda — a duo that has fans “defying gravity” with anticipation. With its two-part series, part one released Nov. 2024 and part two releasing Nov. 2025, the film promises to bring the audience magic, warmth, and a different perspective of Oz to later generations.
“Wicked” is the untold story of the witches of Oz —Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West — long before Dorothy ever walked the yellow brick road. The story follows Elphaba, an intelligent and misunderstood young woman born with emerald-green skin, and Glinda, a bubbly, ambitious blonde who dreams of being adored by many. Though they start as rivals at Shiz University, their friendship blossoms in unexpected ways as they face struggles of love, power, and the choices that ultimately divide them. The musical turns the classic “Wizard of Oz” story upside down, reminding the audience that things are not always what they seem, showing the importance of looking beyond appearances, and challenging stereotypes.
After a year of anticipation, “Wicked: For Good” is finally hitting the big screen, and Mounties are counting down the days until Nov. 21, the movie’s release date.
“I think that the movie really promotes individuality in that Elphie does not lower herself just because everyone else is leaning the opposite way. Having her stand up for what she believes to her core allows her to grow stronger against the odds. She is not willing to back down because it is not the majority vote.” theology teacher Mr. Matthew Dominick said.
As the release of “Wicked: For Good” is just over the horizon, Mounties are buzzing with excitement.
“I bought my tickets for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in case it’s sold out. I don’t think I’ve ever been excited for something as much in my life.” Avery McNiven ‘27 said.
That enthusiasm is shared by others who can’t wait for audiences to experience the twists and turns of Oz on the big screen. “I’m so happy and excited for the people who don’t know how it ends because they are in for such a surprise,” Nora Benamar ‘27 said. “Part two is just an extension on the perfection of part one.”
Some fans are even bringing back their own “Wicked” traditions. “Last year, my friend and I painted our faces green, and to keep up with the tradition, I’m going to do that again this year.” Cecilia Esbensen ‘27 said.

Viewers are also expected to have the opportunity to purchase new, exclusive merchandise at movie theaters. Last year, cinemas like Regal, AMC, and Cinemark released exclusive “Wicked” merchandise, including popcorn buckets, cups, and other various collectibles, many of which were sold out within days. This year, the merch lineup is even more ambitious:
- At Regal you’ll find exclusive combos like “Elphaba’s Collector Combo” and “Glinda’s Collector Combo” which include a popcorn tin and a light-up cup.
- The popcorn bucket designs include:
- An Emerald City Popcorn Bucket, city-scape design, $47.95
