Junior Julia McGlynn has been on the Mount field hockey team since her freshman year. This fall, she committed to Boston College to play Division I field hockey to make the next step in a journey that started with mini sticks in kindergarten and grew into a dream she chased.

Julia grew up with two older brothers, John and Andrew, both are now in college. She attended St. Genevieve before coming to the Mount. Off the turf, she loves hanging out with her friends, baking and shopping.

As a starter for Mount Saint Joseph Academy and club player at Main Line Mayhem, she balances practice, homework, and weekend tournaments with ease.  “It’s exciting and rewarding… but there were definitely moments that felt overwhelming,” she said of the recruiting process.

She first picked up a stick in kindergarten, joined club at eighth and by sixth grade knew she wanted to play at a high level.

“From then on I knew I wanted to play in college,” she said.

Her favorite memory so far has been her entire freshman season: the surprise of making an impact so quickly, the Gwynedd games, Purple November and the friendships she made that year that she will cherish”

“She is very positive and uplifting, a great team player. She is motivated and passionate about our team and about field hockey in general,” Olivia Esbensen ‘27 said.

Choosing a college was not instant. She visited multiple campuses, studied team cultures and weighed how each school fit both athletically and academically. Long talks with family and friends helped.

“I went back and forth between a lot of schools, “she said “In the end, I picked the place that felt like home on and off the field” McGlynn said.

Boston College (BC) first caught her eye the summer before eighth grade when she toured with her brother. Camps and clinics on campus sealed it.

“It felt surreal when I realized I’d actually get to go there,” she said.

She’s excited for traditions, sport events and BC’s community.

Julia is not just a talented athlete, she is an amazing friend and student.

“Having taught Julia for the past two years, I’ve watched her grow from a quiet, hardworking student into someone who confidently shares her voice and consistently excels. She’s humble, dedicated, and brings the same character to the classroom that she brings to the field. I’m so proud of her for her commitment to Boston College and know she will thrive there,” Spanish teacher Ms. Megan Rodolico said.

Between now and move in, McGlynn aims to keep improving lead by example at the Mount, and savor every bus ride, senior day and sideline moments. Overall her work ethic and joy make the program better and show younger players how to chase a big dream with kindness.
