The sudden closure of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in September has left many students and families in the area disappointed, especially those from Mount Saint Joseph Academy who saw the restaurant as a longtime neighborhood favorite.
Iron Hill, a regional chain founded in 1996, shut down all of its locations after the company filed for bankruptcy. The closures were announced with little to no notice leaving customers surprised and unsure of what would replace the well known family spot.
Iron Hill filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, meaning the company did not have enough money to keep operating and had to close down permanently. Financial reports showed the business owned millions of dollars to lenders and suppliers and sales had dropped. The company said it struggled to keep up with higher food costs, less customers and the over challenges of owning a restaurant.
For many Mount students the Chestnut Hill location was more than just a place to eat. It was somewhere they grew up visiting, celebrating team wins, and spending time with friends and family.
“There is nowhere to eat in Chestnut Hill,” Ava Franzen ‘28 said. She added that the loss of the restaurant means fewer options to go grab food.
The emotional impact of the closing was felt by many students.

“My family went there a lot when we were little, so it’s sad that it closed.”Jill Gordon ‘28 said.
Others shared similar feelings.
“I used to go to Iron Hill all the time. I’m really upset that it closed,” Ann Baker ‘28 said.
Students also reflected on memories from Iron Hill.
“I’m completely devastated by Iron Hill closing down. I really loved going there with my family,” Grace Doyle ‘27 said,
For some, Iron Hill was tied directly to school traditions.
“There goes the best family restaurant chain ever we would always go there after Mount basketball. It was a core memory for us.” Anna Marshall ’27 said.
The company shutdown has been felt across the area but the impact it had on the Mount students is especially noticeable. While there are talks of some Iron Hill locations possibly reopening under new owners the future of the Chestnut Hill sire remains unclear. For now Mount students are left with memories and the hope that another family restaurant will take its place soon.
