What would the Mount be without sisterhood?
We spoke firsthand with the Sisters of Saint Joseph who live in Mount’s convent to help us better understand what it means to be a part of a sisterhood.
The goal of our conversation was to spend quality time and learn from the Sisters because they are the foundation of the Mount and without them we would not have our main value.
The Sisters featured who helped us understand their mission and sisterhood while offering quality advice are: Sr. Betsy Schneider- 64 years, Sr. Gerry Fitzpatrick- 65 years, Sr. Betty McVeigh- 60 years, Sr. Gerry Sadowy- 66 years, Sr. William Adele Metcalfe- 62 years, Sr. Maureen Patrick Kelly- 72 years.
When the group was asked how they overcome challenges they gave insights including,“Be open, don’t ever close yourself off to light…look at yourselves with your strengths and challenges… we all have some of each.”
The next topic was happiness and how to achieve it, “Always search for truth…go to the heart of the matter, look for the truth of it…know that you can move and you can do other things in your life that will make you happy” said Sister Gerry Sadowy.
Relationships with God and Growth was another topic,“The realization is that God created you uniquely and God is within you…so you just have to find the God within you and how God invited you to go out and love” said Sister Maureen Patrick Kelly.
When asked about being a sister and a woman of faith Sister Gerry Fitzpatrick said,“You can’t go through life alone so you want to get some people in your life that are wise..and when you get into difficulty, you have someone that you can confer with.”
Lastly, we asked what it means to be a sister, what those who are choosing their vocation can do: “Walk and talk..see where people are and meet them along the road” Sister Betsy Schneider said.
Sisterhood is a core value of the Mount and the Sisters of Saint Joseph are experts in the field of life and can help all young women at the Mount grow with their expertise.
