With finals week quickly approaching, Mounties grow increasingly tense, stressed, and anxious. Everyone knows Mounties are perfectionists. Luckily, a furry friend came to save the day. Meet Vito—a two year old Newfoundland.

Vito and his owner have been a certified therapy team for only a year. However, his handler Robin Petkunas has been working with therapy dogs for ten years. She has found so much joy in helping others and caring for animals. Mainly, the reactions of students and teachers are what inspired her to start therapy work.
“The kids love him. Teachers, the kids, they bring so much joy and calm.” Petkunas said.
“I’m always surprised to see him! He is very cute and friendly, and I think it’s so calming to just see a dog in the hallway.” Cara Gordon ‘27 said when she was asked about her thoughts on Vito.
When Vito arrives at the Mount, he is always excited and looking forward to all of the pets and love he is about to receive from Mounties. Vito is very polite; and when he is ready to leave, he’ll simply stand up and walk away. Just like Mounties, Vito gets tired too. Everyone needs a break every once in a while.

Petkunas said that she hopes students realize that regarding mental health, you can get through anything. It is important to know that no matter how hard things get, it will all be okay eventually. Plus, there are supporters like Vito to help along the way.
Vito and Petkunas have grown very close throughout their time working together. In fact, she advocates for him. This means that it is Petkunas’ responsibility to watch Vito’s reactions and behavior. Additionally, she protects Vito from anyone accidentally being too aggressive with him. They are very close.

When asked what Petkunas hopes her students take away from meeting Vito, she said, “How much joy and calm that Vito gives them.”
“Vito brightens up The Mount!” Amelia McElroy ‘27 said.
Vito is obsessed with all of the love and pets he receives from students. He is a very happy dog who loves visiting The Mount. And Mounties are some very stressed girls who always look forward to seeing Vito.
