A day of costumes and connection: Halloween at Mount
What started as an ancient festival has become a Mount tradition, one filled with laughter, friendship, and the freedom to be anyone for the day
Every year, our school holds a special Halloween parade just for seniors, making it a fun and unique way to celebrate their final year. This event stands out as one of the most anticipated moments of the fall season.
Being a senior comes with special privileges, and this parade is a perfect example.
“It’s a fun little thing to look forward to our senior year because it’s a nice privilege for the seniors,” Addison Ross ‘26 said.
Since only the graduating class gets to participate, it makes it feel exclusive and exciting. It’s a moment of recognition, a time for seniors to shine before their last year comes to a close.
At a private school, students don’t always have as many opportunities to dress up, so on days like this, seniors really go over the top with their costumes, getting creative, spooky, funny, or clever.
“I’m someone who likes to go above and beyond on spirit days,” Shay Gura ‘26 said.
The parade brings everyone together , full of laughter, cheering, and friendly competition, giving everyone a chance to bond and make memories together. It’s a beloved tradition that celebrates all parts of the mount, allowing all parts of the community to participate.
Every Oct. 31st, streets come alive with glowing pumpkins, heated houses, and costumed crowds celebrating a night of fun and candy. Besides this, it is a holiday with cultural meaning, creativity, and community spirit.
“Halloween is one of the best nights of the year, the costumes, friends, staying out, it’s just so much fun,” Molly Groark ‘28 said.

Why we dress up: The History behind Halloween Costumes
Disguises were once meant to protect people from roaming spirits, now they’re a playful way to express creativity and imagination each Oct. 31st.
Halloween’s origins trace back to the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain, when people wore disguises to ward off spirits they believed roamed the Earth as summer ended. Over time, those traditions evolved into the costume wearing costumes we know today. Costumes allow people to explore different sides of themselves, whether that’s through the bravery of a firefighter, the magic of a fairy, or the mystery of a vampire. For any, Halloween is the one day of the year when they can truly become anyone, or anything they want.
Halloween’s past lives: How an ancient Festival became a modern Favorite
From bonfires and ghost stories to candy and costumes, Halloween’s evolution shows how history, culture, and community come together in one night.
Halloween and costumes play a major role in bringing communities together. From neighborhood trick-or-treating to school parties and costume parades, the holiday bridges generations and backgrounds.
” Halloween isn’t just about the candy, it’s about the memories you make dressed as someone else for the night.” Caycee Snyderman ‘28 Said.
As parents and children share traditions, local businesses join in festive decorations, and the entire towns come alive with excitement. Halloween becomes more than just a night of fun, it offers a rare opportunity for unity through shared joy.
